What is Counseling?

Are you struggling with feelings of overwhelm, uncertainty, and loneliness?

Adulting on your own for the first time?

Struggling to find direction, purpose, or meaning?

Haven’t always found traditional talk therapy to be very helpful?

Maybe counseling can help! Young adulthood can be a very intense transitional period in your life and it is not necessarily how it all looks in TV and films. Feelings of isolation, anxiety, depression, and general overwhelm are all very common responses during this time. Having someone to check in with who you can be open and honest with about the ups and downs of the experience can be very alleviating. More often than not, we just wish more people around us were talking about how difficult or stressful it can be.

Counseling is a relationship built on mutual goals set between client and therapist to help find ways of dealing with everyday life stressors that work best for your lifestyle. You may just need someone to check in with every week, or you may want to explore the different ways you may be able to open your life up and feel less “stuck.” Everyones needs are different and my job is to help you explore what you feel you need during this time in a way that is supportive, compassionate, and growth oriented.

How does art help with therapy?

Sometimes we aren’t always aware of whats happening inside us. Maybe you didn’t grow up talking about emotions in a way that makes it easy to explain yourself. Maybe you just have a hard time even figuring out what it is you actually feel. Art can act like a bridge from our internal world to help you externalize what you’re feeling. What does that mean? Basically, art can help you open up more and get to heart of what is going on for you. I’ve seen art work in this magical way that always surprises people. Common phrases after an expressive arts exercise can be “woah, I had no idea thats what I was feeling,” or “where did that come from?” I think art is one of the most powerful tools for tapping into our unconscious.
